What is a Bilty (Lorry Receipt)? A Complete Guide for Transporters
If you run a transport business in India, the bilty is the most important paper you issue. It is also called a Lorry Receipt (LR), Goods Receipt (GR) or consignment note — different names in different states, but the same document.
What is a bilty?
A bilty is the receipt a transporter gives when it accepts goods for carriage. It proves three things: that the goods were handed over, the terms on which they will be carried, and who is entitled to take delivery at the destination.
Because it acts as proof of the contract between the consignor, the transporter and the consignee, a clear and complete bilty avoids most disputes about freight, shortage and damage.
What details does a bilty contain?
- Bilty / LR number and date — a unique serial number for every consignment.
- Consignor and consignee — names, addresses and GSTIN where applicable.
- From and to — booking station and destination.
- Vehicle number and driver details.
- Goods description — packages, packing type, actual and charged weight.
- Freight — rate, amount, and whether it is To Pay, Paid or To Be Billed (TBB).
- Other charges — loading, unloading, hamali, detention, etc.
- Invoice / e-way bill reference of the goods being carried.
- Terms and conditions and the transporter's signature.
Who keeps which copy?
A bilty is traditionally made in multiple copies: the consignor copy goes to the party who booked the goods, the consignee copy travels with the goods and is used to take delivery, the driver/truck copy stays in the vehicle, and the office copy remains with the transporter for accounts.
To Pay, Paid and TBB — what's the difference?
Paid means the consignor has paid the freight at booking. To Pay means the consignee pays at delivery. TBB (To Be Billed) means freight will be billed later, usually through a freight invoice to a regular party. Marking this correctly decides who you collect money from — and is the most common source of missed payments.
